The General

Supporting British businesses

Continuing its support of the South West, Paragon enabled the final phase of a landmark development in Bristol, known as The General to be completed.

The General is a development by City and Country of over 200 stylish converted character homes, comprising of one to four-bedroom apartments and houses, all within the original Grade II listed buildings of the former Bristol General Hospital.

The development is just minutes from Bristol city centre and many of the apartments and houses have water facing or courtyard views.

Tim Sargeant, owner of City and Country, said:
“The Paragon team listened to our requirements and were able to quickly structure a great deal that matched our operational needs. They then closely controlled the process from credit approval through to drawdown, ensuring a swift completion to the transaction.”

Nigel Jackson, Senior Relationship Director at Paragon, said:

“We are delighted to continue our support for new developments in the South West, working alongside a fantastic existing client base that are involved in some exciting projects in the region.”

The General has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. The original building, Bristol General Hospital, first opened its doors in 1858 and cost around £28,000 to build. Much of this funding came from local workers, who gave a penny a week towards building and running costs.

Bristol General Hospital closed its doors in 2012 and the first residents moved into their new homes during 2015.

How Paragon helped

Paragon’s funding of £15.5 million facilitated the last phase of the project and represented just one part of a wealth of support provided for projects in the South West region and in 2018, the works were complete and the building was fully reinstated to its former glory.
