Iceberg and the ILFM award second legal finance scholarship

The second legal finance scholarship in a three-year programme to encourage learning by The Institute of Legal Finance and Management (ILFM) has been awarded.

The three-year programme funds students to study towards a ILFM Associate qualification funded by Iceberg, a leading provider of practice finance to law firms across the UK.

Legal Cashier Jenny Gillman, who works for Brain Chase Coles Solicitors in Basingstoke, Hampshire, is the second student to receive the scholarship from Iceberg, which is funding her studies towards an ILFM Diploma in Legal Bookkeeping.

Mother-of-two Jenny is currently preparing for her eldest daughter to start university next year. The costs involved in supporting both children to achieve the very best in life means that further education has not been feasible for Jenny until now.

She said seeing her eldest child plan to go to university next year gave her the encouragement and motivation to follow suit and return to education for her own personal and professional development.

Since leaving school when she was 16 having obtained her O Levels, Jenny worked her way up the career ladder to her position as a Legal Cashier. The scholarship has enabled her to refresh her knowledge and update her skills.

Jenny added that the course will give her an in-depth understanding, which will help her improve her skills and efficiencies within her role as a Legal Cashier. The course will also build up Jenny’s confidence within her career and personal development.

Michael Stevenson, Managing Director of Iceberg, said:

We felt that Jenny deserved an opportunity to progress her education and career through this scholarship with the ILFM. We are proud to sponsor this scholarship and see people reach their potential in the legal industry. It feels very rewarding.

This is the second scholarship to be awarded this year. The first went to practice manager Sarfraz Ahmed of Metis Law in Leeds to support him in studying for an ILFM Associate qualification.

Tim Kidd, Chief Executive of the ILFM, said:

This scholarship is all about encouraging members to learn more and advance their careers so it is a pleasure to support people like Jenny and Sarfraz in their further learning ambitions.

The not-for-profit ILFM is the UK’s leading membership organisation in the legal sector that provides a range of services and professional courses designed exclusively for legal finance professionals and legal management professionals including legal cashiers, accounts managers and compliance officers for finance and administration.

Iceberg provides unsecured loans to law firms towards partners’ tax, professional indemnity insurance and capital expenditure along with litigation finance for their divorce and probate clients.

Each year for the next three years, Iceberg is funding two ILFM members to study a qualification course with the organisation. Several other smaller awards will give successful applicants the chance to take part in one-day training courses. They are all aimed at improving members’ career prospects in the legal sector.
