“Providing accurate and up-to-date advice to help borrowers make informed financial decisions is all part of the day job for mortgage intermediaries and means that they can offer unrivalled insight on the UK’s property sector.

“Undertaking in-depth interviews with intermediaries enables us to tap into their expertise and gain a greater understanding of how the mortgage market has developed over the previous six months, how it fares currently and how brokers see it shaping up in future.

“In the time since the previous edition of the Mortgage Intermediary Insight Report (MIIR) was published, the UK has endured a tumultuous time, both politically and economically. Understandably, confidence has fallen as a result and financial strain is a reality for both consumers and businesses.

“Defying the wider economic challenges, industry data highlights how strong demand in both residential and buy-to-let markets led to record breaking levels of mortgage lending in the second half of 2022.

“Industry figures show that after contracting since Q4 2021 as buyers brought forward purchases in order to take advantage of the Stamp Duty holiday, house sales increased during the third quarter of the year to levels a little under those recorded during the same period the year before. Despite this, it was remortgaging that was the primary driver of business, something that intermediaries anticipate a repeat of in 2023, so I see product switches being an important component of lender proposition.

“When looking forward, it is also reassuring to see that intermediaries are taking a pragmatic approach to the challenges their business may face. As well as increasing their capacity and capability to manage business, many are focusing on effective communication with both borrowers and lenders as well as placing an emphasis on supporting customers.”
