Centrobed UK Ltd

Supporting British businesses

Producing niche specialist beds for children and adults with disabilities or special needs is a vocation, not just a business, for British company Centrobed.

The family-run firm based in Ashford, Kent, makes made to measure products in its workshop that range from specialist equipment to enable a child to sleep soundly in a cot to a specially-designed bed for someone weighing up to 80-stone, who needs four carers to turn them over.

Cheryll, who has been in the industry since 1982 and has just over 30 employees, has even made a bespoke 9ft long bed for one of the tallest men in the world along with beds in various sizes from bariatric to paediatric.

Keeping a small business running effectively isn't easy and Paragon's Invoice finance team has been a strong arm of support for Centrobed over many years. That has ranged from helping Centrobed to fund a restructure to being responsible for its cash management so that it can swiftly handle VAT bills at the end of the financial year, worry-free.

Cheryll Hollis, Managing Director of Centrobed, said: "People come to us if they haven't got an answer and we try and fix it. All our products are very bespoke and that's why it's important for us to have a business that is going to last the distance.

"Our work is very rewarding as it can give people independence and a better quality of life. There's something that touches the heart about that. It could be mobility for some people, pressure care for others."

The Invoice finance team was flexible with us, so like our beds, we got a bespoke service from Paragon for our needs.

The unique nature of the company's work has even led to them collaborating with television programmes including Channel 5's Big Body Squad, making a bed for a 30-stone woman, and repeatedly supplying equipment for Nick Knowles' BBC show DIY SOS.

Cheryll added: "The benefit about working with Paragon is that I am always talking to a real person, not a computer, and that is especially important when you are a smaller company. The Invoice finance team was flexible with us, so like our beds, we got a bespoke service from Paragon for our needs.

"We have seen times of change through restructuring and come out the other side stronger. Juggling money around and restructuring was a nightmare for me, but I knew I could trust the Invoice finance team to handle things, so I could continue to focus on work with my customers.

“Being an SME, the kind of support and service we get from Paragon makes a real difference.”

One of Centrobed's main clients is the NHS as it also manufactures bariatric supplies including a carer's footstall to ease cleaning of legs although the back bone of the business is specialist beds.

How Paragon helped

Centrobed is a long-established business that has journeyed through some difficult waters to arrive at the successful place it now finds itself.

Adrian Taylor, Head of Invoice finance at Paragon said, "The leadership team at Centrobed have been forward thinking in the evolution of their business and Paragon has worked closely with the management team to deliver flexible service and funding to meet the changing needs of the business.

"It is good to see a British manufacturing company doing so well."
